Every big decision affects both people and systems. Empathy helps us understand the human impact. Systems thinking shows us the ripple effects. Smart leadership relies on both.<\/span><\/p>\n In leadership, we often separate emotional intelligence from strategy, as if one belongs to HR and the other to the boardroom. But the most effective leaders I\u2019ve seen\u2014and tried to become\u2014draw equally from both.<\/span><\/p>\n Empathy is a crucial part of the decision-making process, especially in companies with complex systems and multiple, specialized teams.<\/span><\/p>\n Traditionally, businesses have used a linear approach to management. But as dynamics evolve in response to globalization, technology advances and even climate change, I believe the key to navigating this changing landscape is shifting from linear to circular thinking.<\/span><\/p>\n Systems thinking is the ability to see how parts connect within the whole\u2014understanding patterns, relationships, and root causes to make smarter, more sustainable decisions. It involves paying close attention to feedback and using that information to make strategic adjustments.\u00a0 It requires considering how each decision or change will affect not just one team, but the broader system around it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The advantages of a systems thinking approach are undeniable. In environments with many moving parts, success depends on understanding how those parts function in relation to each other \u2013 not as isolated entities, but as an interconnected whole.<\/span><\/p>\n My background in teaching \u2013 and more recently, in managing the various teams that power ILS language school \u2013 has shown me how essential empathy is in every interaction, from students to internal staff to teachers. Over time, I\u2019ve adopted a systems thinking approach to leadership, and I believe it\u2019s the combination of these two perspectives that has contributed to our ongoing success.<\/span><\/p>\n When I took over, my goal was to create space and opportunities for sharing, growth and collaboration \u2013 encouraging initiatives to emerge organically from the team, supported by leadership, rather than imposed from the top down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n One of the first changes I introduced was a biweekly “What’s New?” meeting \u2013 informal check-ins with an open agenda and a flat structure. These sessions give everyone a space to share what they\u2019re working on, provide updates, ask for input, or propose new ideas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n From a training perspective, I have organized “Team working” courses focused on communication, feedback and self-reflection. We also maintain active Teams channels for sharing updates, resources and announcements to keep everyone connected and informed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n To foster a healthy work environment, we also hold group activities such as \u201c<\/span>vegetarian potluck lunch day<\/span><\/i>\u201d where everyone brought a dish to share; a lunchtime picnic in a nearby park and a historical walking tour of Milan led by one of our teachers, who also happens to be an official guide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n You can\u2019t \u201ccontrol\u201d workplace culture directly with a single decision. Culture evolves over time, and small actions\u2014positive or negative\u2014can reinforce broader systemic shifts.<\/span><\/p>\n Systems thinking<\/b> helps leaders design smarter solutions by identifying where to intervene. <\/span>Empathy<\/b> ensures those interventions are realistic, respectful, and supportive of the people involved.<\/span><\/p>\n Without <\/span>empathy<\/b>, <\/span>systems thinking<\/b> can become cold or mechanical. Without <\/span>systems thinking<\/b>, <\/span>empathy<\/b> can become reactive or short-sighted.
