We are all familiar with that popular management concept: \u201cThe first rule of management is delegation<\/em>\u201d. A recent McKinsey global survey reports that managers spend about 70% of their time on decision-making. No leader can (or should) do everything. So-called \u201chelicopter bosses<\/em>\u201d \u2013 those who have a tendency to micromanage and struggle to let go \u2013 run the risk of missed deadlines, lost opportunities and worse, burnout. <\/p>\n\n\n\n By applying the tools mentioned in previous articles \u2013 clear communication, empathy, a systems thinking approach and effective feedback \u2013 your team should be evolving into a well-oiled machine. With the right foundation, they can take on certain tasks independently, helping you save time, streamline processes and remove unnecessary bottlenecks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For me personally, delegating is essential \u2013 not only to free up time, but also to clear mental space for core managerial tasks such as meetings, strategic thinking, long-term planning and high-level decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On the flip side, while cutting out time-consuming tasks is key for a manager\u2019s productivity, it\u2019s just as important to remember the benefits for those you delegate to. Delegation, when done thoughtfully, is not just a handoff \u2014 it\u2019s a skill that can maximize these benefits for both you and your team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Let\u2019s not underestimate \u201cdelegation\u201d as simply asking someone to do something for you. Delegation is a skill in itself \u2013 one that requires intention and strategy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The first step is to analyze your workload and identify which tasks can be handed over. Next, assess your team\u2019s skills in order to ensure the right match between task and person. Finally, communicate all the necessary information clearly and effectively. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Your responsibility doesn\u2019t end once you have delegated the task. You are accountable not only for setting clear objectives and expectations but also for following up and providing support where needed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n This is particularly important for more complex tasks. Some skills might take time to develop or require specific training or coaching. <\/p>\n\n\n\n For managers this means more time for core responsibilities, the chance to strengthen leadership skills and greater confidence in your own capabilities as well as in your team\u2019s autonomy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n For employees, it brings an obvious confidence boost, enhancement of their skills and new opportunities for growth. In turn, this fosters stronger morale and better collaboration across hierarchies which will ultimately improve output and performance \u2013 benefiting not only you and your team, but the organisation as a whole. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Letting go doesn\u2019t mean losing control. It means creating space for trust, initiative, and shared ownership to flourish.
